Dear haiku friends,

 

Thank you to all who answered to my yellow challenge!

Lemons, butterflies, sunflowers, black-eyed Susans, daffodils or falling leaves or even the light… the Enchanted Garden has filled with your stories, colors and joy. Yellow is not only about autumn, could be also about spring or summer or anything else. Yellow means enlightment, hope, sunshine and creativity. Yellow is about all these beautiful moments you spent to write about. Thank you for sharing your stories with me !

still falling rain . . .

the tang of lemon

This haiku is a sensorial experience, because it involves more senses.

Firstly we are introduced in the autumn atmosphere. The verb ”falling” is in present continous tense,  which means the action is happening now, the rain is falling, which make it feel endless. The word ”still” makes the rain almost annoying and cold. You know that moment when the rain enters your soul and you can`t think about or do anything than looking out the window? The rain invites us to meditate.

Secondly, we can warm up with a hot tea. The first meaning of ”tang” into Romanian is a powerful noise. Then the astringent taste. So we could hear the lemon slice falling in the tea. The poet could simply choose to say the lemon is sour, but she chose the ”tang” word, a single word which can take a haiku from ‘fine’ to ‘wow‘! Because tang is hard to describe, it is a pleasantly strong and sharp flavour, almost sour, that makes your mouth watering just thinking at lemon. A haiku full of flavour, I could say. And I love lemons!

Then, the lemon is yellow, so the haiku answered so nice to my ”yellow” challenge: it is yellow without saying yellow. How lovely! Also, the colour of this fruit adds a little bit of light on the grey rainy background.

This haiku is masterfully built because it uses few words, is short and concise, with a strong image, it doesn`s show, but suggests, it doesn`t put all the story on the tray, but invites us to fill and hear the rain, to taste the tea, to feel the tang of lemon and wonder what was the poet thinking about, what was she dreaming about?

unghiile de la picioare în ton cu vara

se ascund în șosete de iarnă
